Stephanie Autumn brings extensive experience in developing, implementing, and evaluating programs in Indian country. A member of the Hopi Tribe, Ms. Autumn possesses 38 years of local, national, and international American Indian advocacy and policy work experience as well as working with tribal communities to address issues specific to tribal youth.. Ms. Autumn has worked with diverse tribes throughout the country on issues of American Indian adult and juvenile justice, substance abuse prevention, restorative justice, and tribal youth mentoring programs. She has managed projects on AI juvenile domestic assault, a statewide restorative justice program, pre- and post-release services for AI offenders, tribal mentoring, and tribal truancy. She served as the project director for three Department of Justice funded Training & Technical Assistance Centers funded for tribal youth, and has provided training and technical assistance to over 135 tribal grantees. Ms. Autumn has represented the International Treaty Council and other American Indian Human Rights organizations at the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland and New York, Russia, Japan, Africa, Libya, and throughout Europe and the United States.

Stephanie Autumn’s professional experience includes:

  • Senior Technical Assistant and Consultant for the American Institute for Research (AIR), developing culturally appropriate tools for working with Tribes and Tribal school districts
  • Senior Technical Assistant and Consultant for Fox Valley Technical College
  • Coordinator for the Center for Reducing Rural Violence, 2 years
  • Consultant for the Maza Tiopa Mentoring Program, Pine Ridge, 1 year.
  • Coordinator Minnesota Restorative Justice Campaign-Legal Rights Center, 3 years.
  • Program manager for American Indian adult & juvenile offenders statewide in Minnesota- Council on Crime and Justice, 2 years. Case Manager, 5 years
  • Program manager for restorative justice program for juveniles charged with domestic assault in Hennepin County, Council on Crime and Justice, 3 years
  • Director of Social Services for Prairie Island Dakota Community, 2 years
  •  Project Manager for Heart of the Earth Survival Schools Prison Project, 3 years
  • Project Manager for Choices for Indian Girls, Heart of the Earth Survival School, 1 year

In addition, Stephanie has participated in these volunteer activities:

  • Research and program development for South Dakota Representative Paul Valandra’s office. The goal is to develop a cultural based pre- and post-release prison project for American Indian offenders in South Dakota.
  • Coordinator for the American Indian Prison Project Working Group. The goal is to change federal legislation that denies incarcerated American Indians adults and juveniles access to their spiritual practices.
  • Research and program development for Little Earth Community Partnership Programs, currently working with Little Earth elders and administration to raise funds for White Bison training for Little Earth residents.
  • Indigenous Leadership Development training for newly elected Lower Sioux Tribal Council members.
