Circle / Restorative Justice Experience

Karey is an advanced Circle facilitator, and has developed Circles for students K-12, dual credit students, undergraduate and gradate level college students, student government association and student athletes, and organizational employees, from front line and support staff to executive level administrators and vice presidents.

Karey has designed basic Circle trainings, along with designing and facilitating several Circles related to Title IX and sexual misconduct, work place conflict, team development/ team building, community building, and has hosted Circle conversations around the National Week of Conversation Project and National Day of Dialogue. Karey has also presented for the Dallas chapter of the Texas Association of Mediators, and is a past board member of the Texas Association of Mediators.

Karey is an independent dispute resolution practitioner, and provides dispute management consulting, mediation, conflict management coaching, circle facilitation, group facilitation, and dispute resolution training. 

Bio

Karey R. Barnes is a credentialed mediator (TMCA), a certified Conflict Resolution Trainer MTII, a Conflict Dynamic Profile facilitator (Individual and 360), an advance circle facilitator, a Conflict Management Coach (CINERGY), and a Total Strength Deployment Inventory facilitator. 

Karey worked for South Texas College in McAllen, Texas as the Student Ombudsperson, and served as the Director of the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities. In his time at South Texas College, Karey has facilitated group discussions centered on policy and procedural best practices. Prior to his work at South Texas College, Karey served as a juvenile probation officer with Kleberg County Juvenile Probation Department, working with the Intensive Supervision Program and a caseload which covered drug and sex offenses. 

Karey has his 40 hour mediation certificate, and had mediated several conflicts between students, and faculty ranging from interpersonal issues to communication gaps. Karey also has certificates of completion in Foundations of Organizational Ombudsman Practice and Foundations of Organizational Ombudsman Practice – Next Steps for New and Growing Programs, Mediating Effective Resolutions to Disability Disputes, Basic CINERGY Conflicts Management Coaching, Keys to Negotiating for Mutual Gain – A Collaborative Approach (VerbaCom), and Conducting Internal Investigations – Steps to Success. He is also a Certified Trainer of Workplace Conflict Resolution (Mediation Training Institute International), a certificate in Advanced Family and Divorce Mediation, and a certificate in Hostage/ Crisis Negations (Phase I and II). 

Karey is a graduate of Texas A&M University – Kingsville with a major in Criminology and a minor in Sociology. He has a master’s degree in Human Services Public Safety – Criminal Justice, and is pursuing a PhD in Criminal Justice.
